Boston Preservation Alliance:
Preserving a Local and Global Treasure:
The Restoration of The Mother Church
March 30 @ 11:00am
Sponsored by the Boston Preservation Alliance, together with Corporate Members Finegold Alexander Architects, Simpson Gumpertz and Heger, and Shawmut Design and Construction with generous support from The First Church of Christ, Scientist.
The Mother Church is located at the heart of the 14.5 acre Christian Science Plaza, one of Boston’s most recognizable landmarks. The original church was built in 1894 in just 13 months’ time, soon followed by an extension in 1906, completed in an astonishing 23 months. The comprehensive church is a rich blend of Romanesque Revival and Neoclassical styles, reflecting the periods in which they were designed.
To understand the building’s significance both locally and globally, the tour will begin with a presentation on the building’s original design and construction, its past repairs, and the current, multi-phased restoration project. A discussion of the challenges and unforeseen conditions found when restoring the 100+ year old building will feature behind the scenes construction photos. Following the presentation, the tour will move to the exterior of the building to highlight the ongoing work, including the masonry cladding repairs and terra cotta roof tile replacement. It will also showcase the work that is yet to come, encouraging attendees to return after completion. The tour will finish with the completed interior restoration of the original church where attendees will hear about the work that was done to bring it back to its original splendor.
