BUTZ & KLUG:
The Aesthetics of Sustainability: Architectural Design for the Human Experience
March 28 @ 6:00pm - 8:00pm
At bulthaup atelier
138 Newbury Street, Boston, MA 02116
By making human experience the focus of architectural design, the sensibilities of aesthetics and the physics of sustainability become powerful symbiotic forces resulting in buildings that are experientially rich and miserly with energy. Through the exploration of the design process of three different projects: a South End townhouse, an historic suburban home, and a coastal pool house, BUTZ + KLUG Architecture will demonstrate the decision-making processes that drive the firm’s buildings towards aesthetic sustainability.
We will explore the design processes of three projects: a South End townhouse renovation, a historic suburban home rehabilitation, and the new construction of a coastal pool house. Each project has distinct goals, existing conditions, site constraints, client preferences, budgetary restrictions, and personalities, necessitating vastly different outcomes despite striving towards a uniting ideal of aesthetic sustainability. Although we will emphasize the interplay of design and engineering decisions that characterize the projects, it is all components of human life and interaction surrounding a project, which influence the complex fabric of decisions that result in the incredibly collaborative act of architecture.
